Ice 2
I'm almost done reading the book, I've got about 60 pages or so to go. I'm having a little trouble figuring out what I'm going to write about in the "Difficulty Paper" because my book is about Ice-T, a rapper, hustler, robber, drug dealer, TV/movie actor. There's not a lot of difficulty reading this, it's actually really easy and fun. I would like to get a few ideas on what i can do it on but the way i see it, Ice-T is only talking about his life and how he achieved success when growing up in places where gangs ruled the streets and the only way to get money was by pulling off 'licks' as he would say or robberies. My "Conflict Paper" will be easy because I'm doing it on man vs. society. I think that is the main point of my book and I think that's what Ice is really trying to convey to the audience. Man vs. society occurs throught the book in many different situations but Ice-T over came the struggles in his life to become a very famous rapper and actor. His life can be relatable to anyone if you compare it right to your situation, it actually may help you get throught it or gain some knowlege that might help you in life. Ice-t wasn't anything special, he was just a man who had the work ethic to get what he needed done. I believe if everyone had that kind of work ethic and wasn't so lazy, society would be a better place and people would be just better people.

Ice
The book that I chose to read was an autobiography on Ice-T called ICE. It is the story of how a hustler from South Central L.A. came to become one of the biggest rappers of all time and a great actor on Law and Order. This story is amazing and a great read for anyone. The book is written as if Ice himself was talking to you and that's what I really enjoy about this book how it connects on a personal level. So far I'm in love with it! I'm about 2/3 of the way through and should be done with it well before the due date. I hope that next semester we can do something like this again. Thank you. Cart

Senior Project Progress Report
So far in my Senior Project, I've bought all the necessary equipment for field work. A St. Croix fly rod, Ross Reel with floating line, waders, wading boots, and a fly vest that carries all of the smaller items needed to catch trout like the flies and tapered leaders. The amount that I've sunk into the project is approximately $700 but if i didn't already have my waders and boots it could have gone up to $1,000 or more. My father and I have been practicing all the different sorts of casting and the knot tying needed to fish in tight areas and so far it been going really well. I'm enjoying this project thoroughly, but I'm not looking forward to the research paper because I've never really been good at them but i feel like i can put together a pretty good one.
My mentor interview and contract paper has been turned in on time, but i still haven't really got the chance to go practice casting or anything with him so I need to plan another meeting. Other than that its going very well with my project. One thing that i want to try and do is learn how to tie flies, because that is where the true art is in fly fishing, and to say that I can tie them and use them to catch fish is pretty cool. I'm a little nervous about my presentation only because i don't really know how to present what I've learned, but my dad is helping me out on that so I should be good. I hope no plagarism gets called on me because if it does it's completely false becasue i don't do that and this has happened to me before but it was a subconsious mistake swear to god, but i don't think Mrs. Watter believed me. Anyways i doubt its going to happen and my project is going very good and that is all i got to report. Thanks

A Change of Heart About Animals Response
Dear Mr. Rifkin,
I really enjoyed reading your article about the way people perceive animals and how we should treat them better. Animals are very important to the advancement of man we need them and they need us to survive, the bond between humans and animals could and should be better with the way we treat, and care for them so that we can ensure a more humane and natual relationship with them. However I cannot see animals being like us at all. I understand all of the studies you've made references to but I still dont believe it. Teaching a monkey to do tricks does not mean that it is almost as smart as a human. I can teach my dog to sit at two months old but I doubt a human baby could even understand what I'm meaning. Does that make my dog smarter? NO. Its just a trick that only takes a few weeks to do. People develop way more rapidly than any other speices and people may argue that we are more empathetic than animals and i do believe that. People dont eat other people, well most people, but animals eat other animals just by that you can tell that people are more empathetic. Now i know that people can kill other people but usually it has some sort of justification, but when animals kill its to survive. It's sort of barbaric and it is not very humane. I also believe that people are individualistic than animals. We can survive by our selves, while animals usually count on groups to provide. It makes sense that people could see how animals are similar to how they live compared to us. We can feel love they can feel love, they can hate we can hate, they feel pain and so do we. The similarities are very close but not the same. The fact that people are more intelectually advanced just puts humans so much further ahead than animals and makes me think that we are way more empathetic and better overall.

Senior Project
For my Senior Project I'm researching the history and advancement of Fly Fishing. So far I have only gathered my supplies needed for field work on the river which includes my fly rod, wading overalls, fly reel, fishing vest, and of course the fly lures. I know that I'm going to have fun with this project, I mean what can be more fun then being on an open river fishing for hours on end for trophy rainbow trout! I'm hoping to go to McCloud CA, and fish on the McCloud on the upper falls area. That is the first place where i first really became in love with fishing. It was on a summer vacation where I limited out five times (25 fish) on the upper falls and I had a blast. My father and I have made McCloud an annual trip every summer since. After I'm done fishing for trout on the McCloud I plan on going to Trinity River where I'll fish for bigger game in Salmon. Fishing for Chinook Salmon is a bit tricky. They are usually very nice sized fish with your average going about 20-30lbs on a nice open stream. The hard part is trying to get them to bite. They aren't feeding once they are in the river because they are in spawn mode and will die off anyway so what you have to do is try and annoy them with your lure that are usually very big ugly looking bugs that will eat the eggs then they will strike. All i reallt need to focus on is getting my mentor interview in but I'm all set up with the guy and should be able to get it by Tuesday next week!

Into the Wild Final Discussion
Jon Krakauer's book Into the Wild tells the tragedy of Chris McCandless and his "Great Alaskan Odyssey". Chris was a young man with great ambition and persistence who's ideals ultimately got him killed. His journey into the wilderness of Alaska was one that people were calling suicidal and even saying that Chris himself was mentally ill doing it. I don't think its fair to make those accusations without properly understanding the circumstances. For example, Chris and his sister were born due to his father's infidelity with his prior wife, this making Chris and his sister 'bastard children'. After finding this out, Chris was forever changed. He couldn't understand why people were so mean to each other and trying to find the answer to this question, Chris took it to the extreme and cut his family off, changed his name, and journeyed half way across the nation meeting new people while having a profound effect on each of them.
Do I think Chris was suicidal? No. He was a very stubborn, arrogant, and lucky man but he didn't want to kill himself. He wanted to go to Alaska not to die, but try to live life to the fullest with extreme simplicity. I believe that Chris did this to gain a greater perspective on society and the world he lives in. He did this by creating bonds with people, and traveling around hitchhiking while having a lot of time to think about life.
Was Chris mentally ill? Once again, no. Chris's Odyssey was very extreme to the average person and was pretty much based off of his extreme idealism. This however does not make him crazy. The only think that he did that was mentally ill was the way he prepared himself for the Alaskan tundra, not having nearly enough food for the length in which he wanted to stay, an outdated map, poor planning on shelter (but ended up being very lucky he found the bus), not a big enough gun, and not enough experience in the harsh conditions of Alaska it's crazy because he did it on purpose. Simplicity.
I believe if Chris and his father had a better more open relationship, we wouldn't have this story but instead a man that would still be alive today and would probably be successful. Chris had good intentions with his Odyssey but too much overconfidence and stubbornness got him killed, he never wanted to die nor was he insane. He was a man who had a dream and went after it.

Going the Distance 2
After the 49ers went 6-10 in the 2010 season, Mike Singletary was fired. Almost all hope as lost in the 49ers franchise, nobody knew who the new coah was going to be and even with a new coach, the 49ers record would still be below .500. Then it happened. Jim Harbaugh happened. After turning around a stuggling Stanford football program into one of the powerhouses of the NCAA, Jim Harbaugh wanted to become an NFL head coach. He had already played 15 years in the NFL as a Quarterback for the Bears, and the Colts and had been somewhat successful with only a few playoff apperences but nothing special. So immidiatly teams were interested, Dolphins being one of the strongest contenders along with the 49ers. Ulimatlely the 49ers got their man in Harbaugh because he didn't have to move away from him home, the 49ers even offered him less on the contract then the Dolphins.
In the draft that followed the hiring Harbaugh made outstanding picks that would be crucial to the success of the team, the best pick by far was Aldon Smith out of Missouri selected number seven overall in the first round. In Aldon's rookie season he almost broke the rookie sack record with 14, the record being 14.5. Now back to Harbaugh. People were expecting Harbaugh to strip the team dry cut players and put in his 'own' guys, but instead Harbaugh kept virtually the same exact team only a few additions in free agency: CB Carlos Rodgers, WR Braylon Edwards, ILB Blake Costanzo, and C Johnathan Goodwin. Rogers, Costanzo, and Goodwin would prove to be valueable asstes. One of the biggest things Harbaugh did was putting faith in Alex Smith, after Smith was ridiculed for his entire career being called a 'bust' and a loser. Harbaugh was 100% behind what Alex did and Harbaugh even boasted about Smith saying that he is an elite Quarterback, and a Probowler that was probably the first time those words were mentioned in the same sentence with Alex Smith. Even 49er fans were sceptical about it, but appericiated the enthusiasm. WE HAD NO IDEA WHAT WAS ABOUT TO TAKE PLACE.
Week 1 of the 2011 season Harbaugh and his 49ers were in a little bit of a pickel against the Seahawks but a couple of returns for touchdowns gave Harbaugh his first win. The win, however, didn't end the speculation of the 49ers offense, specifically the wide recivers and QB Alex Smith. Alex only had 124 yards passing and the offense looked sluggish to say the least. The 49ers best WR Michael Crabtree had only one catch for 4 yards and the reciver with the most only had 27. So NFL experts deemed this win as a lucky one but still they could only see the 49ers going 7-9 at best. Harbaugh loves being the underdog.

Response to Obesity in Teens linked to fast food
At a New York state court, Samuel Hirsch filed a class action lawsuit against the 'Big Four' fast food restaurant corporations (McDonalds, Burger King, Wendy's, and KFC) claiming that their food is the reason for his high blood pressure, diabetes, and obesity.
As I was reading this article i realized for the first time that these crazy people blaming unhealthy food for their unhealthy body are actually being serious. it's really unbelievable that they can really get away with a lawsuit like that, it's disgusting.
Even after reading all of this, it has not changed my stance on fast food. You can't blame the food, you can only blame yourself.

Going the Distance
In recent memory the San Francisco 49ers have not lived up to expectations of Super Bowl glory which was achieved five times in the history of the team, let alone reaching playoff contention. In The 2005 NFL Draft the 49ers 1st overall pick was quarterback Alex Smith out of Utah State, over Cal QB Aaron Rodgers who was selected 24th by the Greenbay Packers who actually was a Niners fan. Imagine that! What the 49ers didn't realize until 2008, when Rodgers took over for Brett Farve, that they picked the wrong guy. Alex Smith had already gone through four different offensive coordinators and had not mounted to anything at all but 7-9 record at his best, but Rodgers took off like a rocket mounting 4,038 passing yards and 28 touchdowns in '08. It was hard to be a fan back then knowing what we could've had but didn't get it. So speculation started to happen on weather or not Alex was a bust, so far it looked as though but then came Mike Singletary, Samari Mike as they called him when he played for the Chicago Bears and he as the Super Bowl rings to back the nickname up with. He was suppose to turn around the 49ers franchise and restore it to former glory, but what happened in stead was two seasons of nothing but inconsistency and doubt only having at best an 8-8 record. What Singletary did though was set the foundations to what could be the best team in the NFL. The 49ers had all of the right pieces just not the right place. All they needed was a hot head nut out of Stanford named Jim Harbaugh.

Going for Look/Discrimination Response
In today's world it would make sense that corporations hire only based on their 'look' but in affect raise arguments of discrimination. I believe that companies have the right to not hire anyone they don't see fit for the job, that maybe exclusively hiring to the company's 'look'. It just makes sense to me that a business would do that, for example Hooter's only hire women, unless you want to be a cook or janitor, but you don't see any lawsuits coming their way. That might be an extreme example but even in Napa Taqurita Rosita only hires women waitresses but we've come to accept that because its 'normal'. The one thing I don't agree with is the way the branch managers would not even look at an application unless they were white, tall, blonde, muscular, handsome etc. That part is obvious discrimination especially if they're more qualified than then the people already working there. Never make decisions based on race, its bound to turn out bad or not in anyone's favor. I also think that our society needs to not be so senitive to this kind of thing because if you are a morbidly obese person trying to work at Banana Republic you will not get the job, sorry.

Hello B7 Classmates,
This is my blog, Real Time With Cart. As you'll come to find out in these preceeding posts, I love anything and everything San Francisco 49er so if you like any other team, that sucks for you because its reality that the niners are going for gold! The 49ers are a big part of my lifestyle I eat, breath, and sleep them; I in fact bleed red and gold. Although i love my niners family and friends come first. I love being around my friends and just doing stupid stuff with them is some of the things im going to remember the most. My family is a little disfunctional but you gotta love 'em, they provide shelter and food for free! Can you believe that? I have several hobbies that i am very passionate about but one in paricular and that is Fly Fishing. Fly Fishing is not only a sport but an art. It is a very tactical way to hunt for fish by using very small hooks that are ment to interpretate the insects that the fish eats regularly. It's not easy by any means it takes skill and dedication to become good at even casting a Fly Rod . The fact that catching the fish is so difficult, makes the sport all the more rewarding. One of the biggest fish i caught was this year in fact, it was a 23lb Chinook Salmon caught in the Trinity reservation area, and boy was it a battle. It took me about 35 minutes to bring the sucker, it was a majical moment. Fly Fishing is so great that I've even decided to take it up as my senior project and i can already tell it's going to be a fun one. Another hobby of mine is cooking. Cooking is a way to be interactive with your family and other cultures around the world. Food is such a big aspect of our lives that its hard not to love cooking it. I love to BBQ especially. My friends and I at least BBQ onece a week and it's so good, nothing like some pork chops over an open grille.
